Juxtaposition
Juxtaposition in Kendall Yards
Straight line and curved line
Standing in the middle of the piazza, I looked down and saw the lines on the surface of the concrete. At the point where they cross kind of jumped out and spoke to me. It said, "hey, look at me. take my picture." I thought about what the designer might have been thinking when she was designing this area. I think she wanted it to be interesting and not just boring straight lines. I think she was thinking about kids would think when they came here. Would they like it? Did she see kids running up and down the lines playing games? That's what I saw when I first looked at it. Even though there were no kids there at the time because it was twenty below zero.
Crane Branch
It is interesting what we see in 3D because we have two eyes. If we saw everything in 2D, we would see things like this photo as it implies that the crane is coming out of the tree. Maybe if we didn't have much experience in the world such as a child then we might think that is the case. Since photographs are in 2D, our mind tells us that the crane and the tree are separated by some distance. When we look at photos, we see what is there then our minds fill in the blanks. How can we use that to our advantage?
Liquid/Solid
Sometimes things just look like garbage left behind by a careless citizen. When I look at this image, I see the solid forms of the rocks. I can't think of anything more solid except diamonds. The water in the bottle is liquid. Liquid and solids are opposites. When they are arranged like this, we say they are juxtaposed.
